Chiba Institute of Technology (President: Joichi Ito) is pleased to announce that Professor Robert Langer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), whose innovative research and entrepreneurial spirit have made significant contributions to the advancement of medicine and impacted the lives of millions of people worldwide, will receive an honorary doctoral degree.
In February 2024, Chiba Institute of Technology established a system to award honorary doctoral degrees to those who have made particularly significant contributions to scholarship and society and are expected to make further contributions to the university's education and research, or those who have made significant contributions to the university's education and research.
He will be the second recipient of this program since its inception, following Her Imperial Highness Princess Akiko
Dr. Langer's achievements:
Dr. Langer is one of the nine Institute Professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Being an Institute Professor is the highest honor that can be awarded to a faculty member. He has made significant achievements in the fields of drug delivery systems, tissue engineering and nanotechnology, impacting the lives of millions of people worldwide. His innovative research and entrepreneurial spirit have led to the development of countless new therapies and technologies, contributing significantly to the advancement of healthcare.
Specifically, hie has written over 1,500 articles, which have been cited over 422,000 times and his h-index of 321 is the third highest of any individual in any field. Dr. Langer's patents have been licensed or sublicensed to over 400 companies. He is also a co-founder of a number of companies, including Moderna, and has held senior positions, including Chairman of the FDA's Science Board from 1999 to 2002. He has received over 220 awards, including the US National Medal of Science, the US National Medal of Innovation and the Charles Stark Draper Award, often called the Engineering Nobel Prize.
