People tend to think of design in terms of creating beautiful forms, but this is only one aspect of the discipline. Discovering a problem in society, coming up with a solution, and then giving that idea a specific form-this entire process is part of design. In the Department of Design, students will learn various techniques and ways of thinking in order to acquire the following abilities indispensable for a designer: the ability to find and appropriately define a problem on one’s own, the ability to search for solutions in various directions, the ability to propose ideas in an appealing way, and the ability to evaluate in detail and work towards a solution. In addition, students will learn to utilize digital fabrication tools (machine tools linked with digital data) such as 3D printers in becoming designers with both creativity and imagination.
