JABEE Accreditation

What is JABEE?

JABEE stands for the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education. It is a nongovernmental organization that accredits engineering education programs in collaboration with technological institutes and associations. JABEE holds the status of full signatory of the Washington Accord, which is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs and recognizes the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies. Other signatories include the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

What is a JABEE-Accredited Program?

JABEE-accredited programs are designed to achieve the aims of engineering education as defined by JABEE. Engineering education programs accredited by JABEE systematically cover basic to applied engineering studies by technical discipline.
JABEE evaluates engineering programs according to standardized procedures and accredits those that satisfy the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering. Graduates of JABEE-accredited programs leading to a bachelor’s degree can obtain engineering qualifications recognized by signatories of the Washington Accord.

Completion of JABEE-Accredited Programs

To complete a program accredited by JABEE, students must take the subjects specified by the program. Those subjects have strictly defined learning goals and evaluation methods, but that does not necessarily mean that the level of academic requirements is extremely high.
JABEE programs require support to help participants acquire the level of abilities specified by the programs. Therefore, the entire staff of the faculty and/or department that offers JABEE programs provide consistent support until the participating students complete the programs.

Graduates of JABEE-Accredited Programs

Graduates of JABEE-accredited programs are recognized as having received an internationally recognized level of engineering education equivalent to passing the First-Step Professional Engineer Examination, for which the pass rate is about 50%, to become an Associate Professional Engineer. Therefore, graduates of JABEE-accredited programs enjoy a reputation as first-class engineers and, after a certain number of years of practical experience as Associate Professional Engineers, are entitled to take the Second-Step Professional Engineer Examination to become internationally recognized Professional Engineers.

JABEE Accreditation of CIT Programs

CIT is preparing to get JABEE accreditation for the programs listed on the right. If these programs get JABEE accreditation, students who complete these programs will be regarded as graduates of JABEE-accredited programs.
