Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering
Features
Various tools and products such as automobiles, airplanes, computers and mobile phones mainly consist of a kinetic part and its controller. The integration of the two parts achieves the intended functions. Such tools and products are made by engineers, from whom flexibility and creativity are required to address social changes quickly in a rapidly changing society. Such flexibility is nurtured only by acquiring a wide range of knowledge. The conventional segmented educational system does not produce such a result. The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering integrates essential studies for monozukuri education, which includes strength analysis, kinetic mechanisms and knowledge on materials. This department aims to nurture human resources with a wide scope of learning and application capacity.

Curriculum
A new age always requires new technologies. Representative technologies of our time are information technology (IT) and nanotechnology. Many such technologies are the product of a wide range of knowledge not limited to a single specialized field. The conventional educational system that was characterized by segmentation into small specialized fields cannot realize today’s technologies. In this department, with the intent of nurturing human resources who can flexibly address a diversifying society and industrial structure, students in the first two years learn basic and core subjects for each essential field of monozukuri from the development of materials, product development and production to reproduction. Although students in their second year focus more on the subjects of their specific major, they are also encouraged to take classes from different fields so that they can acquire a wide range of knowledge and skills through the interactive and reinforcing effects of various subjects. We also set up a creative engineering training class for freshmen. Our class management, which respects students’ self-initiative, helps raise students’ interest in monozukuri and enables them to better understand this subject. In this class, students in a group cooperate with each other in various learning activities, which helps them to develop problemsolving capabilities and nurtures their presentation abilities.
Mechanical Design and Development Course
This course provides basic knowledge on overall mechanical engineering and motivates students to apply such knowledge in actual monozukuri activities, thereby aiming to nurture mechanical design and development engineers who can show leadership in such large-scale fields as the automobile industry. Through monozukuri activities, students gradually acquire knowledge and the ability to identify issues and solve them on their own.

Mechanical Engineering Course
This course provides the basics of mechanical engineering aiming to nurture mechanical engineers who have strength in environmental, energy conversion and mechanical system technologies. After learning about material, mechanical, thermal and fluid mechanics, students acquire specialized knowledge relative to structural analysis, vibration control, thermal engines, fluid machinery, mechanical design and mechanical processing.

Micro Science and Engineering Course
This course clarifies the micro-range sciences necessary for the creation of machines, aiming to nurture engineers who can address industrial production using cutting-edge technologies.
The course provides classes in the fields of fundamental technologies, measurement technologies, special precision processing of surfaces and interfaces, and intelligent machines, combined with design/drawing and engineering training, which helps integrate the various fields.

Advanced Material Course
This course provides basic knowledge on industrial materials to nurture engineers who can address the entire process from material design through production required by various industrial fields including machines, electronics and architecture, thereby contributing to a recyclingoriented society. To achieve this goal, the course provides education and conducts research on the characteristics of each material, design, manufacture, processing and recycling.
