Department of Life and Environmental Sciences

Features

The defining technologies of the 21st century largely emphasize life and environment, or an epic world that pursues the mysteries of life and also pertains to our future. Genetic diseases can affect human sustainability.
Environmental issues are too complicated and relational to be understood with only a simple picture of substances versus environment. Humans who get involved in environmental concerns must possess firm ethics and balanced feelings. This department offers a wide range of approaches to natural science with an aim of setting an appropriate engineering standard for a new age. As themes of study and research, we have designated the six fields of life, environment, substances, biology, geography and energy. The crossover study of these themes provides multiple perspectives and aims to develop human resources who will protect and nurture “human life and the global environment.”

Curriculum

A common feature of the coursework is an emphasis on learning through experimentation, which helps nurture observation ability, discerning judgment and logical thinking. A special focus is on the development of techniques and knowledge, such as English-language ability to address a specialized field and presentation ability to better enable the dissemination of research results and improve one’s knowledge.Senior students take a larger number of specialized subjects. A particular emphasis is placed on preparation from a long-term perspective by focusing on subjects that coincide with plans for graduation theses and graduate school. The department emphasizes human morality, given the department’s focus on life. To address this point, cultural education programs are carefully prepared to nurture well-rounded individuals, for which thorough guidance is provided in the pursuit of study and research based on ethical use of scientific technologies and the symbiosis of nature and human society.

Course of Creative Engineering for Environment

The purpose of this course of study is to nurture knowledge and the abilities required of environmental engineers and technicians. After providing thorough education on the ethics and social responsibilities of environmental engineers, international perspectives and the basics and applications of math and natural science, this course of study aims to nurture human resources who can address issues in environmental chemistry, substance conversion technology, resource recycling and life-cycle assessment.

Bioengineering Course

With an aim of nurturing human resources who can tackle medical and environmental challenges from a new perspective for a better future, this course of study provides education on medical bioengineering and biomaterials. Understanding the superior structures and functions of living bodies leads to the development of artificial bones,
applications for reproductive medicine and the development of materials that are environmentfriendly and harmless to the human body.
