Department of Design

Features

To realize design that is easy to use for everybody, we need to think about not only beauty but also ease of use and production, safety, prices and many other factors. In other words, historically, culturally, scientifically and technologically supported monozukuri is required. To address such high demand, this department has a curriculum that enables students to acquire knowledge and insight on goals of design, knowledge for setting goals and knowledge on methods to achieve goals. This department has some courses of study under the core “Education and Research on Design Technologies and Methods.” Given this system, students also acquire interdisciplinary knowledge, thereby obtaining the basic underlying knowledge shared by the various sciences.
Such basics enable students to address diverse designs even for future new fields. To nurture such human resources is the aim of this department.

Curriculum

The core of this department is the Design Science Subject Group, which consists of the basic knowledge of design, from which there are three extended courses of study. The Products Design Course addresses equipment and tools, which are central to industrial design. The Information Design Course is about design for systems and content using information, which is the latest technology. The Interior Design Course is for the design of human and environment-friendly architectural structures and interiors. Subjects common to all three courses of study and attended by all students in this department in one large classroom are “Education and Research on Goals of Design” and “Education and Research on Related Knowledge.” Each course of study separately has a class of the same subject for students to take, which is the “Education and Research on Design Technologies and Methods.”
For Universal Design, Environmental Design and Material Design, which had been specialized subjects, the focus has shifted to education and research on the goals of design and related knowledge, thereby being included in the “Design Science Subject Group,” which is common to all courses of study in this department.

Common Subject: Design Science Subject Group

This is for the students of all courses of study in this department. Lectures are given and research is conducted from the perspective of design in the human, natural and social sciences, as well as the artwork and craftwork that are the basics for design. This Subject Group, which includes Universal Design and Eco Design, pursues a kind and sustainable society through human and environment-friendly design and nurtures designers who can achieve this end.

Products Design Course

Comprehensive lectures are given and research is conducted on various specialized knowledge and technologies on product design, including product planning, styling and production design.
This course of study aims to nurture designers who can identify and solve various design-related issues by themselves and create a new sense of value.

Information Design Course

Based on engineering and human science, students learn theories and methods related to the design of information systems, equipment, devices and content. Training is given for consistent education and research on information design, covering user analysis, concept, trial production and evaluation. This course of study nurtures information designers with the most advanced knowledge and technologies who can design attractive products and services that are comfortable for humans, regardless of hardware or software, in the fields of products, information and environment.

Interior Design Course

Interior design is meticulous in a different way than architecture. Human engineering helps address the difference, and lectures are given and research is conducted from the perspectives of new fields. This course of study aims to nurture designers who understand human engineering and human sensitivity engineering and have basic knowledge that can address planning, development and design for the interior industry and application ability.
